MYTH OF HINDU TERROR – Akshay Mehta

India is home to nearly 18 per cent of the world’s population. That’s a substantial amount of human race in one country. Of this, nearly 82 per cent are Hindus. So naturally, it is a nation with a Hindu identity, irrespective of whether people with more “secular” outlook accept it or not. If Turkey can be called a Muslim nation and Germany a Christian nation, India is for sure a Hindu nation that functions in the form of a democracy. Also, we must consider that after 800 years of Islamic rule and 339 years of British Raj, Hinduism is still intact and that too in majority.

BACKGROUND:

Unfortunately India is one of the biggest victims of terrorism in the 21st century world. Interestingly, it has become very fashionable over the past 4 to 6 years to flash Hindutva “terror” or Saffron “terror” at the drop of a hat. Hindutva, is essentially an ideology which is pro-Hindu, and Saffron is a colour most associated with Sanatana Dharma (eternal law or the might of karmas), or Hinduism as the world labels it. Many people bring “Hindu terror”, “Hindutva terror” or “Saffron terror” into political and media discussions to score brownie points and attract a huge audience with the generally Hindu-despising crowd out there — the so-called secular people, communists, and some ‘friendly neighbors’ of who have a big stake in projecting Hindus in bad light.

Since Islamic terror or Muslim terror has been so much in news this century, some people felt compelled to bring in an “equal-equal” balancing act to emphasize their own secular credentials. Of course it would be stupid to say that there are no bad people who are Hindus. They exist. There are criminals, rapists, murderers and much worse people who happen to be from practicing Hindu family or just have a Hindu name. But ‘Hindutva terror’ or ‘Hindu terror’ is mostly meaningless as hardly any Hindu would go out and commit terrorism for the glory of the Bhagavad Gita or for attaining heaven for the sake of Shiva or Durga, or cite a Vedic mantra before blowing up a group of people. Hindu criminals surely exist, but Hindu ‘terror’(of the Islamist variety) is mostly imaginary. I have never come across an act of Hindutva ‘terror’ that killed even 100 people (that’s 0.8 per cent of the number of global terror victims in 2011) anywhere in the world in one incident.

Now let’s go beyond our opinions and claims. Let’s get some hard statistics from credible reports. Beyond the studios of some selected media houses, does Hindutva ‘terror’, so fondly selled by our neo-intellectuals, even exist? If it exists among 15-18 per cent of the world’s population, shouldn’t it be a very visible form of terror in international reports and news items? That too when India itself featured among the 6 most terror-affected countries in the global ranking.

I found one very credible and internationally accepted report on the previous year’s terrorism statistics. I was actually hoping to see a lot of ‘Hindutva terror’-related information from this comprehensive world report on terrorism in 2011-12. To my shock, there was not even a single mention of ‘Hindu’, ‘RSS’, ‘Sangh’, ‘Saffron’ and other labels that Indian media regularly feeds us. There were 16 mentions of India in this 33-page comprehensive report, but not ONE mention of the word ‘Hindu’! checked and rechecked, just to ensure that they were not missing anything. How come the world’s most comprehensive report on terrorism from 2011 does not have a mention of even one terror incident involving ‘Hindutva’ or ‘Hindu’ which many politicians and media persons don’t seem to stop talking about in India? “Miracle”

2011-12 Global Terror Statistics

After failing to find any mention of ‘Hindustan’ terror, I then extracted some key numbers that I hope Indian media stalwarts will read through and get a larger, global perspective. There were over 10,000 terrorist attacks in 2011, affecting nearly 45,000 victims in 70 countries and resulting in over 12,500 deaths. That’s a very large number of people getting affected, even though the number of attacks was fewer compared to 2007.[1]

India features among the six countries most affected by terrorism in 2011. In Afghanistan, 3,353 people died due to terror attacks in 2011. Iraq saw 3,063 deaths, Pakistan saw 2,033, Somalia saw 1,101, Nigeria saw 593 and India saw 479 victims. These are purely terrorism-related deaths, and do not include deaths in religious / sectarian wars like in Syria where more than 20,000 people have died in 2011 itself. The war-torn Afghanistan, the unstable Iraq, and the very likely imploding Pakistan together account for 64 per cent of the terrorist attacks in the world during 2011. India’s most volatile neighbor Pakistan, with a long history of exporting terrorism, saw an increase of 8 per cent in terror attacks compared to 2010.

Now let us come to religious demographics. I am not sure this even deserves mention, but something needs to stand in contrast to all the ‘Hindutva’ bashing in Indian media.

1.      In 2011, 56 per cent of the world’s terrorist attacks (5,700) were by Sunni Muslims. 70 per cent of the worldwide deaths were also OF Sunni Muslims.

2.      Effectively, out of the 12,533 terror victims in the world in 2011, 8,886 were killed by Sunni Muslim extremists.

3.      There were 279 suicide attacks in the world during 2011. Sunni Muslims conducted 93 per cent of these attacks.

4.      Out of 12,000+ killed by terrorists in 2011, 6,418 were civilians. 755 were children. Nearly 90 per cent of terror victims, with their religion identified, were Muslims.

Amazing! What will the ‘secular’ columnists, who made a living bashing ‘Hindutvaterror’, do now? Not ONE mention in the world’s most comprehensive report[2] (about Hindu ‘terror’. Not to mention the fact that an overwhelming majority of terrorists listed happen to be Muslims, whom these folks hesitate to highlight, thanks to their ‘equal-equal’ reporting mission. Is it time for them to get back to their ‘terrorism has no religion’ cliché?

Since India unfortunately figured in this list, it was necessary to dig deep into incidents involving the country, to find out who in India was killing that many people. According to the report, the top non-Muslim terrorist groups in the world were Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) from Columbia (carried out 377 attacks in 2011), CPI-Maoist in India (351 attacks), New People’s Army Communist Party of the Philippines  (NPA-CPP) of Philippines that struck 102 times and Parti Karkerani Kurdistan (PKK) of Turkey (carried out 48 attacks).

Here were the only 3 Indian terror organizations featured:

1.      Communist ideology holding Communist Party of India – Maoist.

2.      Indian Mujahedeen, the terror outfit that is alleged to have links with Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), for which the incumbent Foreign Minister of India Salman Khurshid was a legal voice.

3.      Harkatul-Jihad Islami (HUJI).

Not only was there no mention of the word ‘Hindu’, but all other related labels like ‘Hindutva’, ‘RSS’ etc. were absent as well. Among the three Indian terrorist outfits featured in the global report, two were Islamist and one was Communist. Ironically, it is the advocates of these very same ideologies that have been trying desperately to project to the world the imaginary idea of ‘Hindutva terror’ and the huge danger it poses to humanity.

UNDERSTANDING RSS

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (Nationalist Patriotic Organization) is a right-wing, volunteer Hindu nationalist group. Its ideology is based on selfless service to the nation. It involves unity of Indian religion (religions originated on the Indian subcontinent) like Jainism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism. RSS volunteers participated in various political and social movements including the Indian independence movement and the group became an extremely prominent Hindu nationalist group in India. By the 1990s, the group had established numerous schools, charitable institutions and clubs to spread its ideological beliefs. Some Highlights are:

After the independence of India, RSS was one of the socio-political organizations who supported and participated in movements to decolonize Dadra and Nagar Haveli, which was at the time ruled by Portuguese colonists. It, has been noted that the RSS volunteers participated in the Bhoodan movement organized by Gandhian leader VinobhaBhave. The RSS assisted in relief efforts quite extensively during the 2001 Gujarat earthquake. They helped rebuild villages. They “earned kudos” from many varied agencies and sources for their actions. RSS helped protecting Sikhs during 1984 anti-Sikh riots. They played an important role in abolishing caste system and untouchability. There are 70,000 projects for betterment of country and humanity carried out by RSS.

“RSS has been making determined efforts to inculcate in our people the burning devotion for Bharat and its national ethos; kindle in them the spirit of dedication and sterling qualities and character; arouse social consciousness, mutual good-will, love and cooperation among them all; to make them realize that casts, creeds and languages are secondary and that service to the nation is the supreme end and to mold their behavior accordingly; instill in them a sense of true humility and discipline and train their bodies to be strong and robust so as to shoulder any social responsibility; and thus to create all-round Anushasana in all walks of life and build together all our people into a unified harmonious national whole, extending from Himalayas to Kanyakumari.”

The next question they would ask is about Hindu Rashtra and secularism. While we can give our own opinions to these concepts, but we often confuse our opinions with that of RSS. According to RSS Hindu Rashtra is not analogous to Semitic nations. It can be stated as, “Bunch of thoughts”, that “all that is expected of our Muslim and Christan co-citizens is the shedding of the notions of their being ‘religious minorities’ as also their foreign mental complexion and merging themselves in the common national stream of this soil. As far as the national tradition of this land is concerned, it never considers that with a change in the method of worship, an individual ceases to be the son of the soil and should be treated as an alien. Here, in this land, there can be no objection to God being called by any name whatever. Ingrained in this soil is love and respect for all faiths and religious beliefs. He cannot be a son of this soil at all who is intolerant of other faiths.” K S Sudarsan further says “In spite of this catholic and rational approach of Hindu Rashtra towards the so-called minorities, it is amazing that some people should harbor fear that the ‘minorities’ live in mortal peril if Hindu Rashtra comes into its own. The fear, if at all genuine, can only be due to their misconception that ‘Hindu Rashtra’ would treat other religious groups in much the same way as the Semitic religions did.”

Another interesting thing is RSS never equated “Nationalism (Hindutva)” with Secularism. ‘Then there is the confusion of equating ‘secularism’ with ‘nationalism’. The two can never be the same. ‘Nation’ is a whole and living entity. It has ever so many functions, one of which is the statecraft. And ‘secularism’ is only one of the qualities of that statecraft. Thus equating ‘secularism’ with ‘nationalism’ would be like identifying one of the functions of a limb of a body with the body itself, and exhibits a sad lack of understanding of the basic distinction between ‘Nation’ and ‘State’.’ According to Golwalkar the apt word for our “state” would be ‘multireligious’ and not ‘secular’. In this country, the ‘state’ was never tagged on to any particular faith.

RSS andGandhiji

Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on 30thJanuary, 1948 by Nathuram Godse. No murder can be justified and violence has no place in this civil society. Yet, it is ironical that Godse was violently hanged for assassinating the man who forever stood for non-violence. However, I refute the belief that RSS was behind the murder.

In 1947, Congress started its rule with immense goodwill. But Jawahar Lal Nehru knew that the goodwill will not last forever. Nehru realized the increased popularity of Hindu nationalist party and hence saw an opportunity in Gandhiji’s murder to defame eminent Hindu leaders. Nathu Ram Godse and Narayan Apte were sentenced to death while Veer Savarkar was acquitted. In Para 27 of his statement in the court , Godse mentioned names of Dadabhai Naoroji , Swami Vivekanand , Gopal Krishna Gokhale and  Balgangadhar Tilak as his idols . In the same para he stated that he was very much inspired by the ancient and modern histories of India, England, France, U.S.A. and Russia. He proclaimed that he adheres to the tenets of Socialism and Marxism. Not only Hinduism but Socialism and Marxism were also his tenets of political belief. May I ask why Congress never highlights this fact? Why Communists are not held responsible for Godse’sactions? A play called “Me Nathuram Godse Boltoy” also amplifies his views. Another hidden secret is that Godse had left RSS before killing Gandhiji because he found the organization too soft and also said that it was run by eunuchs[3]. The Indian judicial system did not find any link or evidence against RSS. Few other facts which shifts the blame to Congress:

  1.  Medical treatment was not provided to Gandhiji after he was shot. He was breathing and yet no attempt was made to take him to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital and Safdarjung hospital which was just 4kms away.
  2. Gandhiji was killed in 5th assassination attempt. The previous attempts on 20th January 1948 were just 10 ends before the final one. It was a failed one and arrested Madan Lal Pahwa named Godse and Apte as co-conspirators. They were never arrested or questioned.
  3.  There is no record of security provided to Gandhiji after the previous failed attempts.
  4. Gandhiji was adamant about not having security. He wanted full access to people.“ I do not need human protection. I have the protection of God himself.”
  5.  It is said that many people in the refugee camps were already tuned into AIR (ALL INDIA RADIO) on that fateful Friday, as they knew about the murder beforehand.
  6. CBI was active at that time and was good at clandestine operations- but they were not handling the case of previous attempts.
  7.  G.V. Ketkar admitted of knowing the plot six months prior to the murder. Though he was against the plan of Gandhiji’s murder he never took strict actions or warned the police about it.

Beretta 1934: an automatic pistol had a magazine for nine bullets, When these bullets pass through crucial points like the heart, consciousness is finished, but in the FIR it is mentioned that Gandhi utters “Hey Ram” before death. Did someone else shoot him as FIR cannot be forged because hundreds of people witnessed the event? A closer inspection is needed in this matter.

I highly respect Gandhi and make my point clear about his assassination. It is shameful that Congress exploits Gandhi’s assassination for its benefit.

MALEGAON BLAST: NO EVIDENCE AGAINST HINDUS

The reported clean chit to Lt Col Srikant Purohit, an accused in 2008 Malegaon blast, by Army’s Court of Inquiry (CoI) has exposed a deep-rooted conspiracy against Bharat, Hindus and the patriotic people of the country. The whole exercise allegedly conducted on instructions of a section of Congress leaders and some ministers in the UPA government to prove ‘safforn terror’ a reality and also to falsely implicate some Hindu saints and patriotic people in terror activities, now stands exposed. The clean chit proves beyond any doubt that the Hindu saints including SadhviPragya, Swami Aseemanand and others, who were put in jails alleging their hands in some bomb blasts including the Samjhauta Express train blast, are innocent and they have falsely been implicated in all these cases. No investigative agency from Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to Anti Terror Squad (ATS) and now the National Investigative Agency (NIA) could gather any evidence against them. This is the reason no chargesheet could be filed against them even after more than years of their arrest.

Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, in jail for the past five years without any case of ‘Hindu terrorism’ being made out against her, has refused to take medical treatment for cancer unless released on bail. Pointing out that she is a hermit who has lived a selfless and disciplined life, she said her confinement in jail ‘without any reason’ has denied her the freedom necessary to live her kind of life, and has disrupted her daily schedule, characteristics and values of life. It is simply not possible to live a life of hermit in jail. She said only if released she would “undergo treatment without any restrictions and may achieve good health and shall lead a life of hermit”. She urged the court to consider her life and the life of a hermit in the context of Indian culture, and see if there is any provision in law, or judicial discretion, by which she can be granted bail as she is only a suspect in a case (Malegaon bomb blast of 2008). Pledging innocence of any crime, the Sadhvi said she had always lived the life of a nationalist and abided by the Constitution; she has no past criminal record and was wrongfully accused by the Anti-Terrorism Squad. It is also disturbing to learn the amount of torture she has gone through. She was kept in illegal detention for 13 days at Kala Chowki, Mumbai by Anti Terrorist Squad and subjected to horrific mental, physical and vulgar torture. In spite of being a woman, she was encircled by senior police officers and beaten with belts, thrown on the floor, abused in un-parliamentary language and made to hear a vulgar CD. The ATS continued this torture day and night. SadhviPragya complained that she was illegally subjected to narco analysis, and polygraph and brain-mapping tests without court permission. These tests were again conducted after showing her arrest on record. As a result of the “inhuman torture”, she developed serious backbone and other problems and is unable to walk, sit and stand on her own. She is mentally disturbed and her power to tolerate (pain) is fading.

It may be pertinent to recall that on October 19, 2012, Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir personally headed the bench that granted bail to journalist Syed Mohammad Ahmed Kazmi who was arrested on March 6 in the Israeli diplomat car attack case. In that case, as in the case of Kanimozhi and other accused in the 2G scam, the apex court upheld bail as a right. It remains a mystery why bail continues to elude Sadhvi Pragya and other accused in the Malegaon 2008 case even though the prosecution has completely failed to make a case that it can even present to the court.

CONCLUSION

“I also learnt that Hindus not only believed that the divine could manifest itself at different times, under different names, using different scriptures (not to mention the wonderful avatar concept, the perfect answer to 21st century religious strife) but that they had also given refuge to persecuted minorities from across the world—Syrian Christians, Parsis, Jews, Armenians, and today, Tibetans.”- Francois Gautier

In 3,500 years of existence, Hindus have never militarily invaded another country, never tried to impose their religion on others by force or induced conversions. You cannot find anybody less fundamentalist than a Hindu in the world and it saddens me when I see the Indian and western press equating terrorist groups like SIMI, which blow up innocent civilians, with ordinary, angry Hindus who burn churches without killing anybody. We know also that most of these communal incidents often involve persons from the same groups—often Dalits and tribals—some of who have converted to Christianity and others not. However reprehensible the destruction of Babri Masjid, no Muslim was killed in the process; compare this to the ‘vengeance’ bombings of 1993 in Bombay, which wiped out hundreds of innocents, mostly Hindus. Yet the Babri Masjid destruction is often described by journalists as the more horrible act of the two.

Let me then be straightforward about this so-called Hindu terror. Hindus, since the first Arab invasions, have been at the receiving end of terrorism, whether it was by Timur, who killed 1,00,000 Hindus in a single day in 1399, or by the Portuguese Inquisition which crucified Brahmins in Goa. Today, Hindus are still being targeted: there were one million Hindus in the Kashmir valley in 1900; only a few hundred remain, the rest having fled in terror. Blasts after blasts have killed hundreds of innocent Hindus all over India in the last four years. Hindus, the overwhelming majority community of this country, are being made fun of, are despised, are deprived of the most basic facilities for one of their most sacred pilgrimages in Amarnath while their government heavily sponsors the Haj. They see their brothers and sisters converted to Christianity through inducements and financial traps, see a harmless 84-year-old swami and a sadhvi brutally murdered. Their gods are blasphemed. So sometimes, enough is enough.

At some point, after years or even centuries of submitting like sheep to slaughter, Hindus—whom the Mahatma once gently called cowards—erupt in uncontrolled fury. And it hurts badly. It happened in Gujarat. It happened in Jammu. It may happen again elsewhere. What should be understood is that this is a spontaneous revolution on the ground, by ordinary Hindus, without any planning from the political leadership. Therefore, the hindus, instead of acting embarrassed, should not disown those who choose other means to let their anguished voices be heard. There are about a billion Hindus, one in every six persons on this planet. They form one of the most successful, law-abiding and integrated communities in the world today. Can you call them terrorists?
