Gen Raj Mehta: The Sutradhar

Well my eyes are all moist absorbing the comments of Indians of all hues on the stories of bravery narrated with a passion which only a true blue blooded Indian seeped in patriotism can do – that soldier scholar is my mentor Maj Gen Raj Mehta. The man whose pen is a thousand times more powerful then the guns he wielded while in service.

For SAISA readers, he is a familiar name. For others he belongs to the Indian Cavalry and commanded a Rashtriya Rifles Brigade and the prestigious Tiger Division spanning  LoC and the hinterland. Got shot up in an encounter and has a crazy animal called passion for India that drives him.

His first story for SAISA, then South Asian Idea, was Au Revoir Lt Navdeep Singh in 2012. It was followed by a series of stories – stories which take you live to Gurez where the General physically visited the site of the encounter to feel the terrain first hand and relive the emotion of the encounter in the company of Lt Navdeep’s team. The stories that emerged Anatomy of Point Blank Range and I will open Fire First have been published widely and have agitated, motivated and moved the readers who could not but be emotionally attached to the great sacrifices our soldiers are making to safeguard our nation while an ungrateful nation continues to debate non issues on prime time.

This is my tribute to a great patriot who has made it possible for us Indian to be inspired by the stories of these great sons of India. These also include stories of Brig Pritam Singh, MC, Captain(IN) MN Mulla, MVC and Air Commodore Mehar Singh, MVC, DSO, 2 Lt Arun Khetarpal, PVC – stories that will continue to inspire Indians for generations.

Our salutes also to Col NN Bhatia for reliving the 1962 war with us. (here and here)

Thank you General…more power to your pen.
